As Castilian troops started circling the hill, Portuguese decided to change their defensive position before the battle at Aljubarrota. They also built ditches, pitches and caltrops in preparation of the Castilian assault on the other side of the hill. In anticipation, General Nuno Álvares Pereira harangued his troops, largely outnumbered.
